The Cwmkaren Stud was founded in England in 1970. The stud name is taken from Cwm which means valley and Karen who is our oldest daughter. With limited facilities in England we produced the Section Bs Cwmkaren Barry John, Cwmkaren JPR and Belvoir Chervil and the cobs Menda May and Arth Megan.
Carole and I settled in Queensland in 1992 and with more acerage concentrated on breeding Welsh cobs. We purchased from Geraint and Mary Jones the colt foal Nebo Dyfrig Express and the filly foal Nebo Miss Wales. In 1996 we returned to Wales and purchased a couple of days before the Royal Welsh show the two year old filly Sydenham Brioni. To our great delight she won her class at the Royal Welsh under William Lloyd of the Geler stud.
In 2000 we returned to Nebo and purchased Tyngwndwn Dancing Princess from Lisa and Huw Reed.
In 2002 we purchased on the advice of Geraint and Mary the bay stallion Hendrewen Aba Express from Idris and Cynthia James to use over Dyfrig's daughters. The advice has proved invaluable and we are extremely pleased with the results
In addition to the cobs we have Section C and section A mares for Carole to handle.
We show occasionally at the Queensland, NSW and Victoria All Welsh shows.
In 2005 the Cwmkaren Stud was the first winner of the Dinah Creswick National Breeders Trophy and Dyfrig has won the sire ratings competion in both Queensland and Victoria in recent years.
We are also thrilled that our cobs are making their presence felt in other states in Australia and in New Zealand.
